The Office of Veterans Affairs contacted MacFawn Fire & Flood about a specialty cleaning project for a local veteran. The veteran’s home had become overwhelmed with a range of items and hazardous materials, and the City of Schenectady Code Enforcement had condemned the structure and deemed the property uninhabitable. In order for the veteran to continue living in the home, a hoarding clean out and biohazard cleaning were needed.
Removal of Hazardous Materials
After meeting with the veteran and discussing the project in a confidential and empathetic manner, MacFawn Fire & Flood sent crews equipped with essential personal protective equipment to the home. All waste and visible hazardous materials, including trash, spoiled milk, and containers of human waste, were removed.
Given the volume of debris and the uncertainty about what hazards lay beneath the initial layer of trash, the safety of our cleaning crew was top of mind. To protect our team, and still ensure ample time to sort through the debris, the clean out was scheduled over several days.
Hoarding Clean Out
Hoarding clean outs are often difficult due to the circumstances around which they arise, but we always do our best to ease the homeowner’s concerns, and respect their personal property. Although the home contained substantial garbage, there were many items that had sentimental and monetary value, including baseball cards, comic books, and currency. Our crews meticulously sorted through the trash, and stored any items that could be salvaged.
Disinfection & Odor Removal
Once the clean out was completed, there was still a lingering odor in the space. Our crews removed carpeting that had absorbed the odor, and used an odor-absorbing ozone machine. We also performed a detailed, top-to-bottom disinfection and cleaning of the entire home.
